An Breakthrough Novel Quarter Finalist

Quaker women in the eighteenth century were known as the First Women Feminists. Their strength in spite of tremendous adversity has been an inspiration to generations.

Due to traumatic family circumstances, Rebekah Bradford is forced to sign an indentured servant contract to leave her home in London and work for a Philadelphia Quaker family.

Rebekah's journey through life takes her from servanthood to wife and mother and business woman during a period when Quakers were struggling to maintain their identity as the colony attempted to find a place in history that was often in stark conflict with its founder, William Penn.

I really wanted to like this book. The main character is an honorable woman, a Quaker in the 18th century, who faces hardship and overcomes. She travels from England to Pennsylvania as a girl then makes a life for herself in the new world. It's a good story. Somehow, though, the telling fell a bit flat. It was as though the author was merely reporting the events. I didn't get to live within them, to breathe the air of another time. It's that ability to transport you to another time and place that sets the best historical novels apart from the rest, and unfortunately Rebekah's Journey just doesn't have it. That being said, I'm still glad I spent some time with the book. It was well worth the Kindle purchase price. And Rebekah is good company, inspiring company. That's almost enough. Almost.

Rebekah Journey an historical novel edition by Ann Bell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I found this book to be thoroughly engaging. The historical viewpoint of a Quaker woman in those times seems right on. The author's portrayal of her tenacity and resilience in many life situations is well done. Rebekah is a very well developed character. The reality of every day life is well described. The descriptions of place, whether it be in London, aboard ship or in America are well written. I would certainly recommend it to a variety of readers. I look forward to reading others of this author's books.
DISAPPOINTED - I did finish reading this book (it didn't take me long). I have read many historical novels but this book left me wondering if I had chosen one for an elementary reader. It's so basic with no real character development or plot. Even Rebekah's thoughts are shallow and the descriptions are non-existent. The stories of these Quaker families and their plight for religious freedom from England to America had so much promise but the writing quality of this book just isn't there. In the end this book left me hanging wanting more, so much more. No depth in character study for Rebekah, John Reynolds, the Reynolds's family, especially relationship between Sarah and Rebekah. No depth in describing Rebekah's journey or of her inner thoughts and feelings, (repeating the fact she misses her family was a no brainer). I am sorry I didn't investigate the writing before I bought this book even if it was ONLY $5.00.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only was it a good book - I fell in love with Rebekah. What a brave and and inspiring young girl and woman. I learned so much about the Quakers and thier religion and their journey to America. This is a good book not only for adults; but a wonderful book for a preteen or teen girl. This one would also make a good movie.

If you like historical fiction about strong women and their contributions to the United States of America.....you'll enjoy this one. Well worth the money.
This little novel was pleasant enough but obviously written for a younger audience than myself. It felt like a junior high history assignment with an emphasis on the establishment of the Quaker Church in Pre-Revolutionary America. The plotting and character development were minimal and slow. Sometimes it is difficult to tell from the descriptions offered on just what kind of book I am ordering. Fortunately, it was very inexpensive.
Ann Bell is insightfully accurate in her portrayals of 1700s England and the New World. You feel like you are doing the living in the middle of the many deadly dangers and unexpected opportunities awaiting around the next corner. Just when things appear hopeless, a way through opens. Just when things appear to be going great, the bottom drops out. These developments are revealed in ways that all of us find familiar and believable. Her characters truly live for us and we care about them. The times they live in are analyzed with a simplicity and genuineness which is impressive to read. She gets the tensions right between the Quakers and non-Quakers (including Ben Franklin), and between the Quakers and Quakers. The people ebb-and-flow in their moral development and wisdom. Issues of romantic competitiveness, finding your way in a profession, combatting severe depressions, treatment of minorities, using political influence, and child-rearing are raised in thought-provoking ways. Ann Bell accurately depicts the Quaker society and its challenges in a manner which sheds light on the similar challenges which continue to beset Quakers of our modern times. Those Quakers sowed the seeds which bless and bewilder us today. What a great way to live history and ponder social interactions which are ever present. The Quakers of colonial England and the new world had a major influence on how the Western world developed, and Bell has effectively introduced us to it. There is much more to reveal, and it is to be hoped she will continue in telling us more about the Quaker influences and quandries, and making them come alive.
This novel describes the Quaker communities in London, England and in North America. Rebekah is a young girl who is offered an opportunity to move to North America with a Quaker family as an indentured servant, after her father is killed in London. Her emotions on leaving her known world, and experiencing the New World are vividly described. The Quaker philosophies are clearly explained throughout the story, and the clashes with political authorities are well described. The position of women during the eighteenth century is also well portrayed. If you like historical fiction, this is a good book to read.
What might have been an interesting historical novel for adults reads more like the writing by and for school children. Grammatical errors abound. Sentences and dialogue are stilted, even allowing for the inherent rigidity of Quaker speech. There is a paucity of description of characters or places. Any depth is provided (inexpertly) via Rebekah's childish musings.
I only managed to slog through 22 percent of the book so I have no idea how the journey ends. Nor do I care.
It's hard to believe that I read the same book as did those who afforded it five stars.
